Step 1

Past lane: yesterday decides the family

If the sentence is in the past, the form agrees with the subject’s gender or number.

  • был for masculine singular: он, брат, учитель
  • была for feminine singular: она, мама, сестра
  • было for neuter singular: письмо
  • были for plural: они, дети, друзья, мы

Step 2

Future lane: tomorrow decides the person

If the sentence points forward, choose the future form from the subject: я / ты / он-она / мы / вы / они.

  • буду / будешь / будет / будем / будете / будут track person and number
  • With an infinitive after it, keep the same future form: будут играть, будете смотреть
  • вы takes будете whether plural or polite singular
